Designing Technology to Aid in the Early Detection of Developmental Delay in Young Children

The early detection of developmental delays, such as autism, in young children can be crucial in providing better interventions and education for affected children. Currently, these delays are detected by concerns from parents brought up to pediatricians or specialists well after the first signs occur. We present the design of a system aimed to help parents and caregivers of newborn children track and document their child’s progress in achieving approximately 250 developmental milestones. This system incorporates the use of toy-embedded sensors, video buffering techniques, and a digital repository for storing videos.
